Municipal Court Judge

  • Preside over criminal and traffic cases.
  • Presides over motion to reopen, rule, and show cause, and bond escheatment hearings.
  • Hears and weighs testimony and evidence.
  • Imposes appropriate sentences and penalties in accordance with the laws of the State of South Carolina.
  • Adhere to an on call schedule for arrest warrants, search warrants, and subpoenas.
  • Prepare appeal returns and orders.
  • Reads, interprets, applies, and explains laws, codes, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Analyzes situations accurately and adopts an effective course of action.
  • May have to preside over roster meetings, jury selections, or jury trials.


  • Minimum of at least two years of post-secondary education.
  • Town residency preferred
  • Must possess knowledge of municipal, state, and federal laws, town ordinances, courtroom procedures and terminology.
  • Must have knowledge of police sciences and administration.
  • Knowledgeable of town organizations, operations, and policies.
  • Must maintain 12 CLE credit hours of training annually and attend a mandatory CDV class on a fiscal basis.
  • Mandatory requirement to attend a two-week orientation school per South Carolina Court Administration within a year of taking office.
