Job Duties
- Responds to emergency situations within the Town of Winnsboro to perform rescue and fire control; selects appropriate firefighting equipment in controlling and extinguishing fires; lays and connects hoses, holds nozzles and directs fog or water streams, raises and climbs ladders, ventilates burning buildings, gains access to buildings as necessary assisting fire victims administering first aid as necessary.
- Operates and maintains an assortment of equipment and hand tools used in the fire service such as a self-contained breathing apparatus, special protective clothing, fire extinguishers, certain chemicals used in fighting fires, axes, halligan tool, spanner wrench, crowbar, kelly tools, sledge hammer, cutting tools, chain saw, hose appliances, etc.
- Checks fire equipment to ensure proper function. Provides traffic control to assist pedestrians.
- Serves as animal control officer
- Performs dispatch duties which include answering incoming calls, receiving requests/complaints from the public, determining when to assist complainant verbally or dispatch an emergency unit as required; notifying supervisors and/or special emergency teams concerning serious calls; determining appropriate division needed for assistance and dispatching calls to same.
- Monitors and operates radios and/or other communication and information systems.
- Answers emergency phone calls, dispatch calls over radio to officers, input calls on electronic log, contact duty rotation wreckers as needed, answer after-hour calls for Town utilities.
- Provides assistance to visitors in lobby through window.
- Performs fire prevention inspections of residential and commercial buildings and contents; conducts pre-fire planning as needed.
- Gathers physical evidence and preserves for court.
- Provides assistance in training of various fire and/or police services as needed.
- Prepares various required records and reports such as fire reports, daily activity reports, time sheets, dispatch logs, receipts/fines/bonds, security checks, training records, radio logs, building inspection reports, lab requests, incident logs, etc.
- Answers questions asked by the public, works with juveniles and adults in related matters; refers public to persons or agencies which can provide further assistance as required.
- Works under stressful, high-risk conditions.
- Performs general preventative maintenance of vehicle and equipment as needed.
- Participates in training as required.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
Must be 18 years of age, have high school diploma or GED, and a valid SC driver’s license. Firefighter II certification with
five to eleven months of training in Firefighting is preferred but will train appropriate candidate.
Salary Info
Salary – $18.32/hour. In addition, the Town offers a comprehensive benefits package.
